The Hive to be discussed in the House of Commons

Post: # 223099Post South_Belfast_Bee »

Thursday's adjournment debate (at the end of the day), in the name of Harrow East MP Bob Blackman (Con), is:
Hive stadium and the sale of public assets
I suspect this won't be positive. I wonder if Theresa Villiers will be there, given her connection to the club's spiritual home.

I wouldn't hold my breath regarding Theresa Villiers.
This just shows that Bob Blackman is a tosser of the highest order who will lose his seat at the next election.

What is it that Bob wants to exactly debate?

I've tweeted him to ask. If I get a response I'll post it here.

The government has been sanctioning the sale of public assets to private companies for years. That's precisely what happens when local authority schools are - often against their will - taken over by academy chains, headed by CEOs on mega bucks salaries. This is effectively a land grab of public land and facilities by the private sector with no money changing hands.

Does The Hive fit into that category?

I would say that most public leisure facilities are run by private companies. Councils can no longer afford to do this.

That'd be interesting! Is there an election coming up?

My first sentence is actually wrong. It should state TRANSFER of and not SALE of.

Avid Spurs fan, champion of local businesses. He must be going to hold the Hive up as a shining light model of how football businesses working with local authorities can bring significant community benefits, especially when they join up with the local college he claims to support.

Anything else would be Colemanesque hypocracy of the tallest order.

This is the question he raised which has led to the discussion on the 7th:-

May we have a debate in Government time on the disposal of local authority assets? Shortly after the election was called, it emerged that Harrow Council had sold the freehold on the Hive to Barnet Football Club. Barnet Football Club rides roughshod over local people, and no one was consulted about the sale whatsoever. Barnet Football Club illegally plays its first team matches at the Hive. It has ignored planning rules, breaching them on several occasions, and imposes misery on all the residents around the stadium on match days, so may we have a debate in Government time on this issue?

Note sure about the sale of the freehold, but everything else seems old ground?

I thought that there had been virtually no match day complaints from residents?

So does the sale or give away of Copthall Stadium come under that category ?
