Exeter (Hive) The Ex in the City Match Thread

So..... after a mixed start to the season, against tough opposition, the bees have reeled off two convincing wins in the last couple of games, with performances to match the dominance of the scoreline.

Looking back at the highlights of Cambridge it confirmed my view at the time that we were the dominant side, and if it were not for ex-bee stopper David Forde the score would have been even bigger.

We now find ourselves in the playoff positions playing top of the table Exeter. The only slightly sour note is the spate of injuries with Stephens, Brindley, Johnson, Weston, Tarpey and Akinde out, that is arguably half our first choice starting XI missing.

This makes team selection a bit of a cinch with the only change likely to be Akpa-Akpro for the unfortunate Tarpey. Rossi could make a left field selection and pick Malaika Mars but this seems unlikely, although I would hope that he and Akinola at least get on the bench this time.

My team:-

--------------------------Ross------------------------

----------Santos------Nelson------Clough---------

---H. Taylor----Vilhete---J. Taylor---Tutonda----

------------------Campbell-Ryce----------------------

----------Akpa-Akpro--------Coulthirst---------------

Subs: KML, Smith, Payne, Bover, Fonguck, Akinola, Mars,

Looking forward to what will be a tough game, hope we put in a similar performance to Saturday.

No reason to change the side which performed well on Saturday.
Keep JLAA in alongside Coulthirst.
But bench selection could be key for this one. With Amalouzor on loan, and Tarpey probably out, Rossi will need to make a call on who the backup attackers are. Is Akinola in the right frame of mind to come on and change the game or is his head elsewhere? We hope it's the former. If not, EMC may get the nod again.

My concern is going to be fitness. We expect a lot from our wingbacks and two games in a week is going to be hard work. I felt Harry was blowing last 10/15 and thought Tutonda also was more conservative towards the end. Not a critism, they had worked their socks off.

If you look at how effective spurs have been with the wing backs over the past few years, they have been lucky enough to Davies/Rose and Trippier/Walker to switch between to aid recovery. Will be interesting to see how we get on agaisnt a very good Exeter side, begin that the whole team worked so hard Saturday. Hoping there isn't a hangover.

Injuries going to restrict us massively

Only changes that would be realistic if Rossi does want to rest a couple would be Ruben and Wesley to come in

Atleast with our flexibility you could potentially rest both wingbacks and have Jack and Mauro on either flank, alternatively could rest Mauro and JCR

Not sure I would be too comfortable with any other changes but surely fit professional footballers can manage two game within a week?!

An overnight stay in Carlisle for the team would be far more important in my eyes

Exeter have also had a fixture on Saturday so they have similar problems re possibly-tired players. Also their players have to travel quite a distance which won't help their cause.
Our substitutions could be key to the result if this match. Fresh legs will be needed earlier than usual. Rossi shouldn't wait until injury time to put his third sub on.

Looking at the highlights of Exeter's recent games it looks as though they attack in numbers so we may have to reinforce our defence although I'm of the opinion that attack is the best form of defence. So I hope we start positively and don't get any more injuries.

Some of their fans seem to think this is the fixture they will get turned over in. All good runs come to and end at some point, and we're making chances and scoring goals.

One player to look out for is Reuben Reid. He bullied us last season as they beat us 4-1, but as we've already seen so far this term, we are standing up to these types of opponents a lot better and earning the right to play our own game.

Funny enough I was thinking something similar. Brindley and johnson's injuries could start to be noticeable as players tire.

As someone said, pro footballers should be able to play twice in a week but the WB role is THE most demanding position in football.

I know it's not going to happen but does anyone else think Akinola could do a Vilhete/Yiadom and play at Right Wing Back? Especially with our current formation.

I was thinking that myself as given the lack of options, he may be someone the coaches can work with to develop him as possible cover. He has pace, decent in the air, comfortable running with the ball and okay at crossing. When called upon to defend in the past he has shown he can do it. How disciplined he would be over a full game would be the question plus also how comfortable he is on the right given he has been used more as left wnger.

Hasn't Diouf at Stoke been converted from a striker to a WB this season?

I think Hughes played him in that position last season!
