John Akinde

I’m one of big Johns biggest fans but he hasn’t been his usual self since his return from injury.

Is it that he hasn’t recovered, has no support so is not going central for opportunities or something else? If we are to stay up we need John firing on all cylinders as we need to start converting the chances.

Please no negative posts as he has given a lot to our club and is our top league scorer.

In first couple of seasons for the Bees the number of goals scored from penalty spot masked the fact he did not score that many from open play. It was last season he made biggest impact as all round striker scoring with his head too. The games I have seen him play he is always central when many goals scored/ penalties created cutting in on fullback. Tactically we seem to have forgotten to play the ball into the channels he is most effective. Gash got this and played him in.

I'd like GW to look at footage of John Akinde goals from previous seasons including build-up to get the most out of him. A couple of goals in consecutive games will do wonders. There's a perception he's a big target man with balls pumped to head. He is far better when played yo feet and he can ghost in

Only MA got the best out of him.

His poor performance since TK decided to keep him instead of cash in is another nail in our coffin.

It doesn't matter what he has done in the past. Although he hasn't been at his best, and been injured for a majority of games, he has still been a damn sight better than all the other incompetent bottle jobs that he has the misfortune to currently call teammates.

If Barnet were to stay up this season (not going to happen with this group of players though,) John will have to play a major part in the escape. He needs to start creating more chances for himself and go on a little run. Hopefully when one goal comes, more will follow swiftly after.

One of our greatest ever players.

Take away the penalties (most of which he won) he'd still be one of our greatest ever strikers.

Blokes a legend. Hero. Loyal. Delivers. Wouldn't be in this league without him.

We've been blessed he's barely been injured. He'll fire us out of this hole.

All great footballers are like great artists.

All great artists are prone to self-doubt.

Unfortunately, both Akinde and Coulthirst are currently shadows of their potential and massively lacking in confidence.

We have seen the potential of both of them in the past 18 months and on form, they are unplayable at this level.

It's incredibly sad the position we are in and almost inexplicable given the talent in the squad, but the rot set in and i'm sure injury didn't help.

It's not over yet though.

Back in the good old days Barry would have stuck John and Shaq in a capital league game away to Wokingham and got one of them to score 4 or 5 to restore their confidence!

Akinde is at his best when we play an early through ball (or ball over the top) for him to run onto.

That should be the first ball our players look to play when we win possession back.

Was thinking likewise about his injury, however if anybody can dig us out of this situation it is him. So come on big John, we're all behind you.

Obviously injury has affected him more than we think but I thought he was back to his best on Saturday against Notts County, looked really fired up. We'll definitely need him to go on a goalscoring run in the next 5 vital games if we've got a chance, #COYB!

Only MA seemed to get the best out of him, as someone said earlier. Didn't MA bench him at one point in a (successful) attempt to get him back on form when Akinde's form dipped a little?

EDIT: Yes he did http://www.times-series.co.uk/sport/138 ... ney_today/

MA had the team playing to his strengths. You can't complain at lack of goal power from a number 9 when he receives no service and has to go in search of his own scraps.
Yes, he scored lots of penalties, but virtually every penalty he scored he'd won in the first place. Therefore what difference does it make?
The guy is a Barnet legend.

Agree
Whether it’s a ball over the top or cutting in from the left. Akinde likes the ball played in front of him.Akinde seems to be receiving the ball and laying it off more with his back to goal.Thats not big John’s strength.
We have to play to Big Johns strengths. It’s been proven to be successful.
I’m just very surprised we can’t utilise Shaq properly to play alongside him.
You would think they had the potential to form a good partnership.
Charlie Macdonald and Akinde formed a good relationship in the early days.
Shaq is not to dissimilar.

Agreed that Akinde has been great for us but he needs to start working harder for the team.

He has to start putting in more of a shift - I've watched him in games recently where he's been guilty of not attempting to win the ball back, not jumping for headers, being offside because he's too slow at coming back.

I think he's always been quite a good team player. Maybe less so this season due to injury, disillusionment etc.
But in truth, how much of a shift did centre forwards like Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer etc ever put in? They just around the goal, let their teammates do the graft and took the credit for scoring. We don't expect other players to cover several positions in the same match, why should we expect it of our number 9?
