GK - Ross

DF - Santos, Sweeney, Johnson, Tutonda

MF - Vilhete, Weston, J Taylor

CF - Akinde, Coulthirst, Tarpey

A lot of people seem to be leaving out Watson, this must be a mistake. Don't let it happen again people. Jesus is watching.

rudebwoyben wrote:Having become reconciled to our probable fate this season, I have decided that it is an opportune moment to have a look at our squad and decide who I'd retain and who I'd discard in preparation for next season. I'm not sure about the contractual status of all of our players so I've not factored that in. I may also inadvertently miss someone out!

Goalkeepers

I'd get rid of both Stephens and Ross. Stephens seems to have been afflicted by injury too much to be a dependable No. 1 and when he has played this season he has not performed at the standard he set for himself in previous seasons. Ross, to me, is short of the standard required to be a good keeper at NL level: he doesn't command his area enough and while he is a steady shot stopper he is not outstanding in that area. I have no idea if Mckenzie-Lyle is ready for senior football, having only ever seen him play once at Portsmouth in 15/16 but I suspect not.
Legg, I would send back to his parent club at the end of the season.

Full-backs

Starting on the left, I would keep Johnson and Tutonda. They're both of the level required and complement each other pretty well as they have different strengths and attributes. I won't say anything about Blackman
On the right, I think Brindley is worth retaining. I do feel that having a specialist right-back improves the fluency of our play.

Centre-backs

Whilst I didn't envisage Sweeney as a centre-back at the start of the season, I certainly think he's worth persevering with. As for Santos, he has got all of the physical attributes to be a fine centre-back but mentally there is something missing and I'm not sure whether that can be rectified. Clough is not up to it and I suspect that the Admiral is going to hang up his boots at the end of the season. Plavotic I would send back to Bristol City at the end of the season.

Midfield
A lot of players to go through here!
I'd keep Vilhete in a heartbeat and think that Weston's physicality will be necessary in the NL next season. I'd also keep Jack Taylor without hesitation.
Ryan Watson just doesn't do it for me as he does not perform consistently at the level required for an effective centre-midfielder and the odd Hollywood pass and fierce shot does not make up for that.
Ruben Bover has been too lightweight and ineffective for a supposed creative winger/midfielder and should be released.
I would keep one of Wesley Fonguck and Fuad Sule although I have not seen the latter play at all.
The likes of Harry Taylor and Nana Kyei have not developed to become serious first team contenders and shouldn't be retained.

Forwards

Unfortunately, I think that John Akinde's time with us is up and that he needs a fresh start elsewhere to revive his career.
Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro has flattered to deceive as he often has during his career and ought to be released. Signing Jordan Nicholson on an 18 month contract is a mistake that ought to be rectified at the end of the season, while Justin Amaluzour has looked worse every time I've seen him play.
However, Simeon Akinola was an accomplished performer for Braintree at NL level, Shaquille Coulthirst showed earlier this season that he can be a devastating striker when deployed correctly and Dave Tarpey deserves to have the opportunity to show why he was a goal machine for Maidenhead. As for Alex Nicholls, half a season ago I would have had no compunction in getting him released but he's been our best forward since Westley took charge and he does seem to have that striker's instinct of scoring goals.
Shomotun had a bright second half last night and if he continues like that he would make a case to be retained.

Feel free to disagree with me!
Other than keeping both the keepers, and keeping JA i'd agree with this, and good one for starting the thread. Sweeney and Nicholls have been the bright spots for me this season, along with Tutonda, who has come on in my view. Shomutun looks potentially very good on Tuesday; Fast, feisty and skilful, and I'd keep him to see if that potential develops. I'm still bemused why he was taken off on Tuesday!

Goalkeepers

Stephens - Let go - Constantly injured, cannot kick, does not command his box
Ross - Keep - fine as a back up keeper, decent shot stopper
Legg - Will return to parent club

Full-backs

Johnson - Keep - Still young and got potential, solid left back but maybe as back up
Tutonda - Keep - One of our best players, good going forward, very athletic, should be one of the first names on the team sheet
Blackman - Get rid - Useless
Brindley - Keep - Been reasonably solid since he's come back from injury
Briggs - Get rid - No idea why we signed him, awful against Port Vale

Centre-backs

Sweeney - Keep - our best player for about the last 10 games, quality since he's moved to centre back, definite starter
Santos - Keep - just, looks good on his day but needs to improve concentration
Clough - Keep - as squad player
Nelson - Get rid - old, slow, too many mistakes
Plavotic - Get rid - why did we sign him?

Midfield

Vilhete - Keep - A fan favourite but often goes anonymous in games and gets preferential treatment, but can stay as a squad player
Weston - Get rid - Enough is enough now, awful passer, constantly loses ball
J.Taylor - Keep - So much potential just needs some more game time
Watson - Get rid - No idea how he gets in our team, rarely creates and does not prevent goals
Bover - Get rid - Can see the talent is there but does not perform consistently and too lightweight and weak
Fonguck - Keep - Always looked good whenever I've seen him, good feet, keeps ball well
Sule - Get rid - No idea
Kyei - Get rid - Done nothing
H.Taylor - Get rid - Liability at right back, centre mid, wherever you play him, caves under pressure

Forwards

Akinde - Keep - had a poor season but I reckon will be class in the national league, strong physically and scores goals
JLAA - Get rid - Terrible goals to game ratio, slow, waste of space
Nicholson - Get rid - Too lightweight, technically decent but will be anonymous in national league
Amaluzor - Get rid - Awful whenever he's come on as a sub, no football intelligence
Akinola - Get rid - headless chicken, runs about, does very little, admittedly decent as an impact player
Coulthirst - Keep - Should be doing better, needs to stop falling over, technically good, believe he can rediscover his early season form
Nicholls - Keep - Goalscorer, but only as back up, anonymous when not scoring, runs around a lot
Tarpey - Keep - Such a shame about the injury, could be great for us
Shotomon - Keep - Potential, good technically, needs to adjust to physical side of game

After today's shambles, I would keep Mauro, Sweeney, Nicholls and Akinde, who I think will come good again next season. I hope EJ and Tarpey can recover from their injuries but as far as I'm concerned the rest of them can be given their P45s. And yes, that includes Jack Taylor.

Oh, and keep Westley too and let him build a team in which he doesn't feel he needs to deploy a LB as a striker.

Goalkeepers

Stephens - Release - Too injury-prone and can't kick
Ross - Release - There will be better back up keepers in London for less money
Legg - Release

Full-backs

Johnson - Release - Don't think he's good enough going forwards at LB
Tutonda - Keep - Potentially excellent
Blackman - Release - Obviously
Brindley - Release - Imagine he would be on decent money, signed as a wingback for Eames' 3-5-2, not worth cost now
Briggs - Release - absurd signing

Centre-backs

Sweeney - Keep - strong player
Santos - Keep - just
Clough - Release - donkey
Nelson - Offer coaching job
Plavotic - Release

Midfield

Vilhete - Keep (and captiain)
Weston - Keep - good experience to have in a squad player
J.Taylor - Keep - potential
Watson - Release (asap)
Bover - Release - poor man's Luisma
Fonguck - Keep - Good squad player
Sule - Release
Kyei - Release
H.Taylor - Release

Forwards

Akinde - Sell - cash in while he has value (?)
JLAA - Release
Nicholson - Release
Amaluzor - Release
Akinola - Keep
Coulthirst - Keep
Nicholls - Release
Tarpey - Keep -
Shotomon - Keep

Release 19
Keep 10
Sell 1

It doesn’t seem that there’s much unanimity about who to keep or release apart from keeping Mauro and releasing Watson!

Elliot Johnson has generally been a very reliable sometimes outstanding performer for us so harsh on him given that he has had 0 to do with this season's shambles...he might want out anyway who knows not sure what is his contract situation.

Sule we haven't even seen play so harsh on him also and I should imagine will be under contract.

Akinde's value must have more than halved since the summer.

We saw Sule for part of the Crawley away game. IMO he didn’t look like to be able to do a job and I’m not surprised Westley isn’t playing him.
