Thats amazing how you have come to the conclusion that Shaq and Tarpey don't compliment each other, how many games have they played together?#Beebot wrote:Tarpey needs a target man alongside him I think. I really don't think we need to sign another winger. We've added Walker and Sparkes and I think that Still will soon realise that Tutonda can provide a threat down the wing, provided he doesn't sell him first.
Elito doesn't have the best of reviews from his last couple of years at Cambridge.
The new centre forward coming in could spell the end for Shaq, who simply isn't doing enough for me and who we could make a few quid on if sold to an L2 club.

Give Shaq the service he'll score goals. Love how people have written him off?! Scored a decent number last season with bugger all behind him.
Re: Cobblers (Onefield) The Misery's Company Match Thread
I've seen enough of Shaq to know that he's ball greedy and does not like passing the ball about. Tarpey isn't dissimilar, but he's a proven goalscorer, Shaq isn't.UnderhillStackSave wrote:Thats amazing how you have come to the conclusion that Shaq and Tarpey don't compliment each other, how many games have they played together?#Beebot wrote:Tarpey needs a target man alongside him I think. Tarpey also scored 50 goals in the space of just over a year playing alongside a target man, there's no point experimenting with anything else when we know that works.

I see Shaq filling the Charlie McDonald role. Will chip in with 15 goals but a good foil to a main strikerninestein wrote:Shaq reminds me a bit of Adam Birchall. Doesn't stop running all day. Runs the channels well enough. Good feet. But like Adam, his goals to games ratio was never brilliant. Still not sure of the best way we should be using Shaq's abilities. He's not at his best trying to hold the ball up with his back to goal. He gets out-muscled to the ground too easily. He likes to play on the shoulder, turn defenders as the ball approaches and get away from them. In L2 his opponents were very wise to this, and more often than not he ended up losing his balance, and possession. In the National League he might have a bit more joy. We all saw how John managed to get in behind NL defences with a lot more ease compared to L2.

It’s bonkers. The best combination play I saw all last season was between Tarpey and Shaq last season at Swindon . They looked like they’d played together for years. You don’t always need a big man little man combo up top. Bull and Carter were an unbelievable partnership and neither was a target man. Two players in sync with another are far harder to stop than lumping it to the big man to flick on for a little manUnderhillStackSave wrote:Thats amazing how you have come to the conclusion that Shaq and Tarpey don't compliment each other, how many games have they played together?#Beebot wrote:Tarpey needs a target man alongside him I think. Re: Cobblers (Onefield) The Misery's Company Match Thread
It's all about the service into the front two. If we are setting up to play with wide players and put crosses into the box, it makes sense to have a big man in there. If we are setting up to play the ball into the feet of the front 2, then Shaq and Tarpey could work. However, I get the impression we are gearing up for the 1st approach, and our new number 9 will be the big man we have been looking for to complete the jigsaw.
Barnet showing all the flair of Rupert-the-Bears trousers, but lots more style!

No you don't, but we saw last season that Swindon game was an outlier. In that game there was acres of space on a large pitch, and we played an expansive 352 with JCR providing plenty of quality through balls through to the attack.Mr Smart wrote:It’s bonkers. This year we have a 442/4231 with Sparkes hitting high crosses into the box. That doesn't suit Shaq and Tarpey at all. There also isn't a creator sitting behind them and we'll have plenty of games against teams who put the whole defence behind the ball where we need to be direct.
I see Still lining up a target man to play alongside Tarpey. Shaq most likely moves wide in the 4231 or onto the bench in a 442. I'd question whether he wants to stay if that will be his role.

Tarpey impressed me when he came on last night, looking fit and fresh, creating himself chances out of nothing as well.

I agree with Afrobee that our wingers do not look to be of the necessary quality and that they do not work defensively or offensively at present. It seems we have replaced Nicholls, Akinola and Vilhete with vastly inferior players.
The rest of the team looks ok, and if we can find a way to get Fonguck in to the team then his lung busting runs from central midfield may well help give us the creativity we need from central areas. Failing that we could play a 4-5-1 formation and bring in Jack Taylor.

Well hopefully Akinola and Mauro will be back soon. Not that anyone knows as we don't get told.Bee_Forever wrote:I agree with Afrobee that our wingers do not look to be of the necessary quality and that they do not work defensively or offensively at present. And Wigan's first foray into Premier League was down to Nathan Ellington \ Jason Roberts, and Palace's run to FA Cup Final Wright and Bright
