Queensbury Labour - Epitomising BFC as 'political football'

Post: # 238217Post MCB »

Some of you may not have seen - so -

The local Labour councillors (Sachin Shah, Kiran Ramchandani & Michael Borio) called a local public meeting as "we want to hear your views" with regards to the Hive expansion. As per their video (https://www.facebook.com/75906667762729 ... 364060022/) the issue is regarding local parking issues & congestion on matchdays.

This is completely fair enough, and i'm sure that we would all want our elected representatives to look into such things, and represent our views, which they should be garnering at such public meetings. Well done them, democracy in action.

It's just that, well, I have 5 small issues with this.

1. They have already decided that they "are completely opposed to" the extension, thus making it pointless to seek their electorates opinion
2. Kiran stated "We’ve been asking the club for a long time to make match day parking free", which erm, runs contrary to the restrictions on planning which states we have to charge, and would of course lead to far more people coming by car exacerbating the problem.
3. In the Hive's existence it has been full once - thus in 3 years, the potential for more visitors and cars using the neighbouring roads has been once.

OK, this is the bit that really irks me, the politicking that shows an immense bias immediately. That they show no interest in actually hearing both sides of the argument. They don't want to hear the views of anyone from the club, anyone in the area that supports the club and may counter the argument:

4. The meeting was "Saturday 10 February 3pm Canons High School". Co-incidentally the same time as Barnet vs Notts County kicked off

5. The meeting was right after the lesser North London teams derby around the corner. At Wembley. As everyone was leaving. And traffic is significantly worse than usual in the area, because of Spurs and Arsenal fans. In fact, i'd say they scheduled the meeting at exactly the single moment in the entire year where they had the perfect storm of a) no opposition to their views and b) worst traffic congestion which was undoubtably blamed on Barnet FC.

Anyway, rant over. But, as they say, plus ca change. Anyone know how many people The Hive employs - OR - is it possible to find out how much tax they pay as a FOI request?

Of course there's not much they can do about traffic congestion arising from Spuds matches at Wembley as it's in a different borough to them but they can use the Hive as a means to show that they are doing something about it, even though it probably contributes very little to traffic congestion in the area.

Does anyone have any idea how the meeting went on Saturday?

It's funny how it's LABOUR opposing the club in Harrow and CONSERVATIVES opposing the club in Barnet. Where are all those people who vilified the Conservatives and eulogised the Labour party In Barnet? Embarrassed to have the 'boot on the other foot'? Where is equivalent 'Labour can support Barnet FC in Harrow' thread?

I find it funny that Labour authorised the sale of the freehold at the Hive to the club but are now opposing it's development.

I didn't differentiate. I've developed a healthy dislike of most politicians over the last ten years :-)

For a start, these are the local ward councillors not the council leadership.
Secondly, the Labour run council has allowed Barnet to acquire and develop the site.
Finally, the local MP is our 'friend' Bob Blackman, who has always been vehemently anti-BFC (but has been fine about Spurs congesting all of North West London by playing at Wembley as he's a Spurs fan) and is a Tory.

I'd be amazed if there was anyone that feels that way considering it was John Prescott that banged one of the firmest nails into our coffin in Barnet.

There is one Barnet supporting councillor in Harrow though. Whereas I suspect every candidate in Underhill Ward is suddenly a Barnet fan.

Isn't Sachin Shah (Cllr Grandstand) The Labour Leader in Harrow?

Local elections are now only 3 months away. That's when the politicians come out to play.

Despite initially responding to some of the posts on the facebook link, they failed to answer any more, including mine about a positive manifesto and engaging in the community asset and opportunities such as teenage football sessions and walking football.

The club should go on a minor offensive and run a few ads in the local press highlighting the work the club has undertaken since taking over the site from dereliction and all the antisocial behaviour that was going on around it. All the main parties are trying to score points with the residents in the run up to May and it would be interesting to see what line they all took when presented with the painful truth. Nothing controversial or aggressive but just informing the electorate on the community side to the club and the obvious benefits it brings.
