Looking at the list of teams that were in that division we have been one of the lucky ones. Although five have played in the Football league since then. Only ourselves and Yeovil are still there. Be careful what you wish for, we could have easily gone the way of Boston, Maidstone or Scarborough

Barrow AFC
Bath City

Gravesend & Northfleet
Kettering Town
Maidstone United
Northwich Victoria

The current Maidstone United were Maidstone Invicta who changed their name in 1995

I thought that there was some continuity between the ‘old’ Maidstone and the ‘new’ one through the youth team.northantsbee wrote:The current Maidstone United were Maidstone Invicta who changed their name in 1995

It's not that many of the others that are even in the NL....even as a reformed club.northantsbee wrote:Looking at the list of teams that were in that division we have been one of the lucky ones. Re: Alliance Premier League, 1979/80
I remember a glowing sense of pride at the time that we were 'mixing it' with the big boys of non-league football (I don't think full league status was seriously contemplated by anyone at that time). Also because we'd managed to snap up Millett and Townsend, who were quite highly sought-after talents at that level. It was a sign of things to come, although of course we endured some pretty desparate times in between then and Barry's second spell.
Re: Alliance Premier League, 1979/80
The previous season we had lost Greaves Jonny Fairbrother and George Cleary so where were the goals going to come from against all these thug northern defenders we all said? We picked up Stevie Brinkman, Steve Turner returned and also got Bob Booker on loan which helped steady the ship. The best signing of the season although it was only for the blink of an eye(!) was Martin "Norman" Conquest ....just the name! He scored 2 goals in two games and then disappeared or more worryingly turned into Elwyn Roberts. I have been meaning to ask if anyone knows more about Norman?
Re: Alliance Premier League, 1979/80
Just remembered we got him from Luton.

I caught up with Colin Hardman when I came down to watch the game vs Grimsby back in November. He's still pretty good at golf despite his age !!
