Louie Annesley

Post: # 240965Post inflikted »

Just a heads up that Barnet U21 defender Louie Annesley has just received his first callup to the Gibraltar senior national football team: https://twitter.com/FootballGib/status/ ... 6351384576

He currently has 6 U21 caps for Gibraltar, notably playing in the 1-0 victory over Macedonia in October (Macedonia had only 4 months previously played at the UEFA Under 21 Championships), making a big goal-line clearance late in the game: https://twitter.com/LouieAnnesley4/stat ... 0080545793

He'll be in the U21 squad for the qualifiers against Serbia and Russia too, but is likely to only play one game for them and then feature for the seniors against Latvia. Any youth team nerds here who know much about his potential, whether he could feature for Barnet in the future?

I haven't seen anything of him but he'll be too old for the U18s next season, so he'll either be offered a pro contract or released. Sadly relegation makes the latter more likely.

Never know, if he becomes a regular for Gibraltar seniors, Barnet might want to keep him around. Playing in Euro qualifiers = compensation £££. Remember Farsley Celtic and Bala Town pocketed a tidy amount from Adam Priestley and David Artell playing for Gibraltar.

From a quick look on Wikipedia, it seems that playing for Gibraltar didn't do anything for Adam Priestley's career, he's remained a Northern Premier League player.
David Artell had a long career in the football league with over 400 league appearances, by the time he played for Gibraltar he was in his 30s at the end of his career. The opposite of a young lad whom I suspect most of us have never heard of.
Can't imagine why their clubs would have " pocketed a tidy sum "? Can't see we'd make money out of it.

Farsley Celtic: 25,283 euros, more than most League One and Two clubs and some Championship clubs.
Bala Town: 22,069 euros, only Welsh team to profit aside from Cardiff and Swansea, and I believe that it helped cover their wage budget for the next season.

Clubs are expected to earn even more in the 2020 qualifiers. I would expect someone from Barnet to be watching Louie's performance against Latvia anyway, if he plays like he has been for the U21s I should expect the Barnet coaches to want him to stay at least another year. I know Gibraltar's standard of football isn't very high but the Latvians are a much higher level. On top of that he has to face the U21s of Russia and Serbia the same week.

OK that was interesting because...

Money was quadrupled for the WC 2018 & 2022 qualifiers. Which means that we must have received a ridiculous amount for Luke Gambin to play for Malta.

I can't find the figures, but it's enough to be taken into the equation when selling him to Luton... do you know the more recent figures how much we benefitted by?

From my sources (or should that be sauces) I am advised that 200 chickens were supplied, plucked and cleaned!

If I recall, compensation for WC qualifiers is covered by FIFA so is a different system to Euro qualifiers, so I have no idea how that one works. But things like stature of the player, position of the club in the football league pyramid, etc play a role in how much compensation is paid out. As Barnet are a Football League team they'd likely get more than Farsley Celtic did (although at the same time, Priestley was their first choice striker). It's a complicated system. If Annesley breaks through for Barnet that would be great for him.

Anyway here's a better look at the senior and U21 squads he's in:
Seniors: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar ... rent_squad
Under-21: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar ... rent_squad

For what it's worth Bradley Banda, the GK, can play at a level much higher than Team Solent (where he's studying). Some of his U21 performances are the reason they're doing so much better than the seniors.

My understanding is that he has left the club and is now a free agent.

Daily Mail reckons he's signed for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship. 3 and a half year deal. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footb ... -Imps.html

Feels like Barnet may have missed out.
