So, how are we going to do this season?
So, how are we going to do this season?
After a very encouraging 2022/23 season, some excellent additions to the squad and a positive pre-season, should we be a 'nailed on' certainty for top 7 and a good outside bet for promotion? What do you think?

Personally, I think we will finish in the playoffs. Chesterfield are just too good and have the benefit of a deep squad, so unless a lot of things fall into place that prevent it happening, they are more or less likely to win the league.
On a more practical note, how do you register a vote in the above poll?

Please ignore the question about how you vote, the screen presented me with a chance to vote.
It may have helped to have an option of positions 2 to 7 (playoffs), but with no commitment to the outcome of competing in the playoffs.
Having said this, thanks for providing the interest of having a poll in the first place.

The thing with Chesterfield is that currently their forward options do not look strong. Grigg has not scored freely for a few years and I suppose the calculation is that their excellent midfield will create so many chances for him that he can’t fail to succeed. Their only back-up striker is Quigley, who is not great.barnet6newport1 wrote: ↑02 Aug 2023, 10:28 Personally, I think we will finish in the playoffs. It is interesting to note that there are a few fans of other clubs, who reckon on FootballForums.net that we could be champions! Personally, I'm looking forward to a decent season, but not getting too carried away.
I think we should reach the play-offs again and hope we don't get involved in the "play-off play-off" once more.

Grigg: 22 goals - including four in one match - in 128 appearances over the last 4 seasons.barnet6newport1 wrote: ↑02 Aug 2023, 10:28 The thing with Chesterfield is that currently their forward options do not look strong. I thought that. Play Offs are a lottery, I can't separate between what might happen in 1 or 2 matches outside the season proper. Especially as teams do sometimes finish many points ahead of the eventual promoted club.barnet6newport1 wrote: ↑02 Aug 2023, 10:34 Please ignore the question about how you vote, the screen presented me with a chance to vote.

Fair consensus that the play-offs are expected at a minimum. Exciting times and one we should savior since we know all too well how rarely this feeling comes about. COYB.

With Wrexham and Notts County gone the National league doesn’t look as strong this year. Somewhere between 4th and 7th looks favourite.

We've got to be aiming for third - having to negotiate three playoff games, when you don't have home advantage against a good side in the semis - is always challenging. I personally have a feeling that fourth could be about right, which would undoubtedly still be a success relative to budget, and represent progress on last season.
I don't think a title challenge is out of the question though, with the reduced strength of this year's National League. I could see a scenario like 14/15 where we go toe to toe with a 'bigger' side like Bristol Rovers (Chesterfield in this case), or a more evenly balanced NL where you don't need as many points to be champions - like when Sutton United won it.

It will be intersting to see how we get on agaist Hartlepool this Saturday as they are one of the fancied teams to go back up.
