Cambridge (Away) The Season Starts Here! Match Thread
So...... Saturday sees the bees travelling to the far north (well if the EFL trophy is to be believed anyway) to take on Cambridge United, one of our closest geographical rivals.
Although we have performed with distinction in our preseason fixtures, the hard work starts on Saturday, as we find out which of our players will be first class, and which will be leaving quietly, as the season goes on, having failed to graduate to the first team. Unfortunately our four transfer listed players have been kept back a year, with the class clown Shaun Batt in particular a disappointment, while Tomlinson is on a final warning for attendance, having failed to turn up in any of the preseason games.
With Barnet being offered at 50/1 for the title, the river Cam will not be the only thing worth having a punt on on Saturday.... as teams continue to struggle with John Akinde, although it is easy to go overboard with praise of him. Hopefully Akindepen will be on form on Saturday, sending the Bees fans away from the Cambridge ground Abbey and glorious.
Although the bees have signed four first team players in the close season, only one of them, Watson, will be an automatic choice when the rest of our team is fit. Nonetheless Nicholls and Akpan-Akpro provide useful cover.
Team wise, Allen has set his stall out fairly clearly in our last two games with Weston starting as a wide midfielder and Nicholls positioned alongside Akinde, although this could just as easily be a 4-5-1 with Nicholls out wide and Weston in the no 10 position.
Personally however I would go strong with Gash up front with Akinde as follows
----------------------- Vickers----------------------
---Taylor-------Nelson-----Dembele----Johnson--
--Weston-----Watson----Togwell----Gambin-----
---------------Gash-------Akinde---------------------
Subs: McKenzie-Lyle, N'Gala, Champion, Muggleton, Vilhete, Nicholls, Akpro-Akpan,
I am doing this one by train arriving at 10:30 so will see all 1,400 of you there!
COYBS!

First game of the season we can all be optimistic, so here goes.... This will be our year and we going up as Champions, worst case will be play off final win at Wembley.

We need to start this season as well as we finished last season. I'm quietly confident but as we all know a summer of expectation can be blown apart by a bad opening week. 50-1 does seem very generous, but you'll never find a poor bookie. We're growing up as a team but maybe this season Is a little to soon.

We cant afford to start so badly with our away form.
Last season away to Orient, we could have sewn up the first half and the game....after that it was a struggle to claw back any away form.
BTW, there were fears from Orient about the impact of the Olympic stadium and West ham. Any more news on this?

I think we will have a good year. Gambin is kicking on nicely watson looks a quality signing and big john remains our ace in the hole.
I just hope we can keep them.

I'm in Mexico
And by complete coincidence there's another Bees fan at my hotel. So the Cancun (temporary) BFCSA will be cheering on from here. Both of us.

MA keeps talking about that Orient game and how much we need to do better than that on the opening day. Every now and then there is a 'benchmark' performance from the past which we use to gauge our improvement. That was one of them. A previous example was the Halifax game in 2014. I'm optimistic we can grab a result up at Cambridge. We are looking strong and organised as ever. If we play to our strengths we will do well. I just hope the new lads like Ryan Watson show the quality they have demonstrated in pre season when it comes to the real thing.
Barnet showing all the flair of Rupert-the-Bears trousers, but lots more style!
