Tough question from the 60's

Post: # 320292Post Old News »

Before the switch to the Southern League in 1965/66, Barnet won back-to-back Athenian League titles.
For good measure, the reserves also won the Athenian League - Reserves Section for those two seasons.
In fact, the reserves done the double both years, by also winning the Athenian League Reserves League Cup.

Would anyone know the details of those Athenian League Reserves League Cup finals, by any chance?

I've looked in my Athenian League handbook and it does not say who we played

It’s a shame that records of the Athenian League reserve league don’t seem to be available. When Barnet turned pro in 1965 the reserves joined the Metropolitan league. They only lasted one season when they finished 10th out of 20 clubs. The following season they withdrew after a few games and their record was expunged

Further information about the 1964/65 final it was played on 10th April 1965, Barnet scorers John Wortley 2 Barry Weightman 1. If anybody has a programme from the end of the previous season it should record the result of the previous challenge cup.

Would the answer be revealed in Barnet programmes from the season or next if somebody has a set?

The only info I can find for the 63/64 is, we beat Maidenhead in the semi final and played either Walton And Hersham or Wealstone in the final but cannot find a result for that game.

The Times group has been going for many a year, I remember reading the late John Pollard's reports on Barnet back in the 60's. So I would have thought they must have a archive. Trouble is most local papers have been superseded by free 'through the letterbox papers' whereas you had to pay for the Barnet Times and Barnet Press and got a comprehensive report on local football.

Old News. The reserves in their last season as amateurs, 64/65, won the treble as won the HIC in last match of season.
Is this the last or only time a BFC team has won every competition it has entered?

That must be the the last time. We only had a reserve team for one more season and they didn’t win their league that year. The first team would have to win the FA Cup to achieve that record.

The reserves would have been unbeaten all that season had it not been for the Southall saga on the 13th April.

In those days Barnet were also affiliated to the London F A and the first team played in the London Senior cup. There is a possibility that the reserves would have played in the London Intermediate cup.
