Tough question from the 40's
Tough question from the 40's
Here's another testing Bee's history question.
During the war, Barnet played in the Herts & Middlesex League, which also operated a League Cup competition.
Barnet won the 1944/45 version, by beating Golders Green in the final (at Finchley) 3-2 aet (28/4/44), would anyone know the details of the previous rounds, by any chance?

Re: Tough question from the 40's
Courtesy of Rob Cavallini, A HIstory of Barnet FC, Part Three 1939-1965:
"The League Cup was perhaps Barnet's most impressive success. The Bees started in the first round with a 3-1 victory over St Albans City, after volunteers helped clear the Underhill pitch of snow.
In the second round Barnet endured an epic struggle with Southall (4-2), only sealed with a late goal.
The semi-final at home to Tuffnell Park ended 2-1, and the Bees then faced another tough match in the final at Finchley, against Golders Green. The Hendon team equalised in the last minute to take the game to extra time, before Reilly secured the cup for Barnet in a 3-2 victory."

Re: Tough question from the 40's
Thanks very much for all of the detail, I appreciate it.
Re: Tough question from the 40's
Could someone help me with a missing 1942/43 Herts & Middlesex League Cup result please?
I haven't been able to find one result and date:
1st bye
2nd/q-f (possibly versus Southall?)
s-f Hitchin Town 2-1 Barnet (24/4/43)

I've moved on to the 1943/44 Herts & Middlesex League Cup, but again I'm one detail short, could anyone please tell me the date of the Walthamstow Avenue win?
1st Barnet 11-1 Grays Athletic (5/2/44)
2nd/q-f Barnet 2-1 Walthamstow Avenue (date?)
s-f Hitchin T 3-1 Barnet (22/4/44)

2nd/q-f Barnet 2-1 Walthamstow Avenue (date?)

Re: Tough question from the 40's
It was Saturday March 11 1944. This patronising snippet is from The Essex Newsman of Friday 17th so presumably refers to the previous Saturday. Thanks to both of you for confirming the date, yes the style of reporting seems a touch different then!
