How do you start following Barnet?

Post: # 345671Post thefootballtrimmings »

I'm trying to better understand how we all came to support the mighty bees. Maybe there could be some new learnings off the back of it to inspire a future generation of fans.

Your answers are too specific.
They were /are now my local team should just read as that - I've never lived in Barnet or Harrow area but started going to Underhill as it was my nearest professional lower league club.
I also heard about them and went to watch but it was nothing to do with Fry / Flashman, they were last century so won't effect more recent supporters.
Could you consider amending your options to cover a broader area of supporters.

I can't seem to edit the poll sadly but they were specific on purpose, as I'm interesting to know who's supporting us from Barnet and now Harrow. Maybe a third option was needed for your circumstances (nearest local club but not from Barnet or Harrow area) but I'd select 'I'd heard about them' in your case. Barry fry was just an example, as the bees did get a fair amount of media attention back then.

Same as Becbee for me. I have never lived in the boroughs of Barnet or Harrow, but the Bees were the nearest pro team to me as a kid

They were my local team. I am from the borough of Barnet and went to college at Middlesex Poly as was and took my friends with me to watch them play.

It would be interesting to hear if there are any Hendon, Colindale or Cricklewood based Barnet fans (Borough of Barnet rather than from the original Barnet area)

I played Championship Manager 01/02. Wanted to pick a team from the lowest available division in England, which was the Conference.

Barnet was pretty much a random choice but I liked the colours and the fact it was from London.

Well, I grew up in North Finchley and then Finchley Central. I’ve never lived in Barnet and haven’t lived in the Borough since 2006. Does that count?
My reason for supporting Barnet is not applicable for any of the options in your poll.

Born in Tottenham, then jumped around council housing in Finsbury Park, East Finchley, East Barnet then New Barnet as a kid.

The East Barnet years were the ones I became hooked on the Bees after losing the love for Arsenal and not being able to afford tickets at Highbury. Saw an ad in the Barnet Times for £5 memberships and the rest was history.

One of the options should be "My dad (or Mum) took me to my first match and I've been going ever since". In my case that makes it 66 seasons.

I supported barnet because in 2017 they gave out free tickets to a friendly (the game vs concord rangers)

It's interesting how access can be so vital. It's all good supporting spurs/arsenal when you're younger but it was/still is hard to get tickets and prices are very high. Barnet was a no-brainer for me after getting my first taste of live football thanks to free tickets from the school. I think I was paying £5 a ticket at the time (2000-ish).

Seeing how so many of us can't accurately answer and the poll has only been up for a couple of hours, might it be possible just to scrap this one and start a replacement poll?

Saying I'd heard of them sounds quite a limp response. I've heard of hundreds of clubs - football and otherwise- but that wouldn't mean I'd support them.

Born New Southgate and started in 1961 which I think was Barnet2 Carshalton 4 .Would get a bus up to underhill one week and a bus up to Summers lane the next.,Until l saw the light and went to a few away games.Worked for Eastern gas and Brian Goymers father was a storeman so i manages to get a few free tickets .Started playing for East Barnet on Saturdays which cut down my saturday trips.
