Players to make debuts against Barnet

Post: # 379404Post MCB »

This got me thinking - but was along the lines of "can't believe he's still playing" and seemingly at a very high level

Checking where he's been a few years, turned out he made his professional debut against us in the Football League Trophy for Gillingham we won).

England's Jarrod Bowen also made his debut against for Hereford in the Conference (again, we won).

Any other big names made their debuts against us? Just thinking of prospective future quiz questions...

Are we counting friendlies? I’d imagine a few of Arsenal’s new signings over the years would count

I seem to remember Paul Merson playing his first game for Arsenal in a friendly against Barnet. If my memory is correct he scored a couple of goals.
It was a long time ago so forgive me if not correct.

I did see Yaya Toure get outplayed by Liam Hatch, and Theo Walcott made his Arsenal debut Vs us. Not sure which Arsenal player would be the most famous to have played his first game against us, but Paul Merson sounds good

If PSFs are included, then I think Robin van Persie made his debut for Arsenal at Underhill on 17 July 2004.

The Sol Man actually made his first appearance for a winning club 12 days before the Barnet friendly (11.8.01), as sub in a 2-0 win v Mallorca in Austria. He also played against Roma 2 days later and at Norwich on the 7th Aug 2001 before gracing the hallowed slope of Underhill.

The Merse made his debut the previous season against Manchester City - Div 1 22.11.86. He did play in the friendly v Barnet 20.10.87 and scored twice. Steve Morrow made his first appearance (and Charlie Nicholas made his last, as did the legendary Rhys Wilmot)

Walcott didn't play in the 2006 game, or indeed any pre-season games (!) - he'd been on the bench a handful of times the previous season (inc. Champions League semi final) and was put straight in as sub v Aston Villa on the opening day for his debut without having played any first team friendlies for some reason.

but Joe O'Ceaurill did :)

In case anyone is wondering, which I know you all are, the Man U players to make debuts in that game were Adam Eckersley, Lee Martin, Richie Jones & Darron Gibson.
