I agree with this, Dean has always said he won't sign for the sake of it. Realistically whilst we do want competition for Kabamba (especially) & Gorman - these guys will start every game so you're arguably signing someone to bench warm (or worse).

I am very intrigued what the squad will be next Saturday - we're going to have 5/6 players gutted to be not even in the squad.

Something tells me that Danny Collinge might make a decent fill-in holding midfielder were Gorman injured or suspended but I might be making the classic mistake of assuming any centre back who's comfortable with the ball at their feet could play further forward (the Dan Sweeney effect in reverse).

How about Beard?
I liked Elliot Johnson in that role away at Gateshead 2014.

Disagree with the top paragraph, we should always be looking to sign better players, Leyton Orient and Stevenage both moved on Gorman when they found better. There’s no need to be sentimental. This isn’t me moaning about Gorman I think he does a really good job for us but he’s not indispensable.

Same goes with Kabamba he’s not Harry Kane and any striker that comes in plays second fiddle. We want to bring someone who might be better and might take his place, that will also bring out the best in the players

The reality of our place in the pyramid is that there will always be a lot of players who are better than what we have and DB is the sort of manager that always has his eye out for improvements.

It’s becoming less common for CBs to also play in midfield. The spacial awareness of both positions are so different. CBs are largely concerned with covering the space behind them whereas a midfielder needs to move 360 degrees to cover FB/CBs or engage with midfielders coming onto them. The modern midfielder needs to be quite mobile which is why Sam Woods looked so cumbersome.

What I would say is that Collinge could potentially do a job in midfield because he’s less of a sweeper and typically likes to be proactive in his defending.

The squad doesn't need to be complete at matchday one. So long as we are competitive from day one. On paper we should be just that. We need to have scope to adapt after the opening games. Injuries could happen early doors. A weakness might also get exposed. Good to have the resources to react than having already spent them.

I've just seen this article, which makes interesting reading. Although it is about Chesterfield, it does highlight some of the striker options out there. Any thoughts?

Most of those unrealistic even for chesterfields budget. Only one I would realistically have is Shaq Forde who did well at York last season.

Agreed. Would add extra fire power to the team, would fit in well I think.

Some of those options are laughably unrealistic. Might as well Chuck Haaland on the list.

True that most are pie-in-the-sky options, but Micah Obiero was the one who caught my eye.

Pretty sure Obiero has been playing as wing back/winger at Wealdstone. We just need an out and out striker

He was good in spells for us but only really an requirement if Wynter goes.

I think we have Stead and Kabamba as target men so need a pacy striker/winger like Kanu who can run off them.
