Welling (Away) The Match Thread Putting on the Welling-tons
So...... Saturday sees the bees continue their FA Trophy run away on a wing and a prayer at Welling United.
Welling is named after a local spring with the historical name of Welwyn, and Welling United will be hoping to stop treading water and to rise up the league. Treading water will also be what a number of people will be doing with heavy downpours and weather warnings before the game. It will be interesting to see how the Welling pitch copes given last time we visited it had more bobbles than a Where's Wally convention.
After an abysmal start to the season Welling United (aka the Wings), seemed to fluttering their way to the Southern Premier division but 8 points in their last 5 games have seen them soaring towards safety. Professional angler Rod Stringer has taken over management of the team and they seem to be responding well in the tackle and the lure of Wembley will be another welcome distraction for them.
While I would not bet against them (and Pritchard certainly shouldn't), I still think that we will have enough to defeat them as long as Brennan puts out his strongest team. The last time we visited Welling we escaped with a 2-1 win thanks to the genius of John Akinde. On that occasion we had an old keeper with concrete boots who did not come off his line but was solid otherwise. Unfortunately on that occasion having a subbuteo keeper in Stack did not help as the ball took a wicked deflection off one of the hillocks and left him helpless.
Despite the fact we will have Keeley in goal this time I am sure he will temper his more expansive goalkeeping instincts on a dodgy pitch. Otherwise Brennan will have to swallow his pride and allow Laurie Texas Scapegoat back in goal. Speaking personally the style of play I am looking for does not include the goalkeeper taking a stroll in the 100th minute but hey ho, in Deano we trust. I just hope he stays on the floor this time if defending a shot on the ground rather than leaping in the air like an imbecile. If the era of Rossi showed us anything its that gymnastics have no place in first team football.
If we are lucky we will have the likes of Gorman and maybe Kanu available for this one. I don't know what the sitch wih Pritch is but I would imagine he will be suspended pending the outcome of the betting enquiry. It is such a shame as he seems like a decent guy and is a real leader on the pitch. Hope things get ironed out soon and he is not out for too long.
On to the team:-

Not been to Welling since about 1991 when there was aggro top end of the ground....Good times
Re: Welling (Away) The Match Thread Putting on the Welling-tons
I've been to Welling twice much more recently than that. So far as Im aware there was absolutely no trouble on either occasion.

No ticket news so assuming unsegregated

Thanks Mr Erroll. As a Blue Light Card holder this is very appealing!

Did you have to throw it on the pitch on Saturday ?
Re: Welling (Away) The Match Thread Putting on the Welling-tons
I chose not to. Maybe we have misinterpreted the actions of our local friends who were just throwing their card up into the air in jubilation.

The link doesn't offer home/ away tickets so do we assume no segregation?
