Barnet Olympians
Barnet Olympians
Dear All
With the greatest show on earth's opening ceremony this evening are there any other Barnet players or connections with the Olympics?
Lester Finch represented Great Britain way back in 1936 in Berlin. He played the full 180mins across Great Britains two matches scoring once.
Dennis Kellenher represented Great Britain in 1948 in London under the stewardship of Matt Busby. He played 3 matches scoring once.
Future manager Dexter Adams was in the 1956 Olympic Squad in Melbourne.
I can't find any medallsts among them.
Best wishes
John

There were two Barnet players in the 1960 Olympic squad. Bobby Brown and Roy Sleap.

Poor opening ceremony by the French
Re: Barnet Olympians
Alf D'Arcy and Tony Harding played in the 60 Olympic qualifying I always thought but were not selected for the Games.

It was spoilt by the rain. I think most of the negative comments emanated from people that lacked a basic grasp of French history, culture and humour.
I thought the opening ceremony for London 2012 was brilliant, but how many people watching outside this country really understood the significance of the excellent section on our beloved NHS?
Re: Barnet Olympians
Opening ceremonies are often a bit strange in any sport. It was probably better on TV. Lots of things happening in various locations. The crowd at the Eiffel Tower wouldn't have seen the torch being lit. Normally the whole ceremony would be in the Olympic Stadium where the crowd see everything.
The lighting of the flame was certainly different. Trying to guess where it would end up. Ironically, I thought they were heading to Notre Dame! I guess the point is that the whole city can see it in the sky throughout the games.

Barnet showing all the flair of Rupert-the-Bears trousers, but lots more style!

I don't think they would like a torch anywhere near Notre Dame.ninestein wrote: ↑28 Jul 2024, 00:35 Opening ceremonies are often a bit strange in any sport. It was probably better on TV. I don't think it was great as a TV spectacle, but was very impressive in person.
I think it was interesting using the Seine rather than a stadium like usual.
The locations have looked amazing throughout the Olympics. Think it has been brilliant.

Been listening all day on the radio. Makes the day go quicker. I think my highlight so far has been the mountain bike comeback after the puncture.Jimbokav1971 wrote: ↑08 Aug 2024, 09:13I don't think it was great as a TV spectacle, but was very impressive in person.
