Tamworth (Hive) The Pig's Ear Match Thread

Post: # 379464Post Bee_Forever »

So...... Saturday sees the bees looking to continue their 100% record at the temporary stadium as we take on the resurgent Tamworth in our latest Bananarama fixture.

Not much of interest aside from their inside ski slope and that they are the birthplace of a famous breed of pig. Barnet's link to Tamworth is Matt Redmille who brought home the bacon (and ate a fair bit of it) during his time with us. While Tamworth expect to be scratchings around for points as they look to re-establish themselves as a National League side, 5 points from their opening 5 games is a crackling start. Before I trotter way with pig puns I will say it is good to have them back and I ham looking forward to the away fixture.

In terms of Barnet team lineup I think we need to go back to our strongest team and hopefully Deano will be on the phone to Spurs to see if captain starjump is available to keep Hayes on his 50p toes. I think it was a case of Dean being caught cold by the Magpies but we need to start imposing ourselves on this league and he needs to find a way to develop as a manager to avoid these kind of brain fades.

'ham looking forward to the away fixture'. Hopefully that line was included simply to wedge in you pun?
Tamworth is one of the dullest places on God's earth with a ground to match.

I'm hoping we see an annihilation like we saw last season against Boreham Wood and Dorking.

Lets put a stamp on our authority and have a proper ruthless streak to our performance to show the division we well and truly mean business.

A new bloody striker in our ranks would help with this, but beggars can't be choosers.

Tory scion Robert Peel's famously average pledge to avoid a 'porkpetual vortex of streaky bacon' in the hugely unambitious Tamworth Manifesto is a famous legacy of the town. So don't dis(h up your sausages without sufficient accompanying sauce)s.

Anyway, the fabulous Statfold Country Pork has a retro roller disco a mere 12 minutes drive away, and the delight that shall greet happy joggers who set off an hour earlier, from 11am, plus unlimited narrow gauge rides.

Plenty of time to do both. Come on you Bees! 🎉

Red sauce, brown sauce or no sauce at all? Was always the question on five :)

I've been reading comments from fans of Boston and Aldershot whose teams have played Tamworth already this season. Apparently Tamworth are the masters of the Dark Arts, they won the NLN by playing "route 1 bullying tactics" and seemingly continuing this season.
Quote from Aldershot fan "
"Tamworth's style of football is not one I would want to watch every week, but if it gets results, you can't blame them. They harass and challenge for every ball and once they win possession they launch it forward to eager forwards - their midfield is virtually redundant. The players didn't deal with Tamworth's tactics at all well".
Seeing as Deano didn't cope with Maidenhead's style of play on Monday, I hope he's aware of Tamworth's.

As for looking forward to the return fixture, apparently their plastic pitch throws up even more black bits than Dorking's did !

It's a pretty basic strategy, (they line up in 4231), but I actually think it's similar to the way we played under DB in his 2nd season, with Gormo just turning the opposition again and again and again, and then pressing the opposition into their third and exploiting chances coughed up by the opposition off that in dangerous areas. The 3 supporting midfielders break forward to support the lone striker, a big(ish) striker in Creaney who puts himself about, but I wouldn't worry about him coming up against our centre-backs. They compete everywhere though and especially win their duals defensively. They will also be a threat from set-pieces.

In his post-match interview, Andy Peaks commented that while he has been known to keep the same XI where possible throughout his career, (Tamworth and before that Rushden & Diamonds), he doesn't think they can afford to do that against FT teams, (because they will just get out-run against fresher opponents).

Tamworth aren't great and they might just be the perfect team for us to play next, (main attacking threat isn't quick and their defenders prefer to defend in the air rather than on the deck). They had a centre-half playing at right back when I watched them earlier this season and indeed JCL, (their starting centre-half), has played 4 out of 5 games at right back this season, (so I hope we play Kanu on the left).

Matt Curley is their right back from last season and although he returned to the starting line-up in their 4th game, he lasted less than an hour and then wasn't in the squad at all when they won on Monday. I'm pretty sure that the only other right back in the squad is a teenage loanee who I don't think has played yet. We HAVE to attack them down that side.

A redundant midfield and launching the ball forwards, dark arts... sounds like Borehamwood reincarnated, snd DB found a way to beat them.
Barnet showing all the flair of Rupert-the-Bears trousers, but lots more style!

I watched Tamworth v Shots game on TV. On the basis of that I would endorse the above comments.
Tamworth are a bunch of bruisers who launch the ball for their forwards to muscle their way into an opportunity to shoot. Our usual defensive style may find this a challenge to deal with as will Brunt.I hope not but I suspect we will be in for a tough afternoon.

I don't think so. Quite the opposite in fact. I agree with the way they play, but I don't think they have the pace to trouble us.Their striker Creaney is a big lad, but he's not huge, and he's not very athletic. He's not 25% the player Cardwell is for example, and he got no change out of our defenders. Every time they launch the ball at him, it will just be giving the ball to us and it will come straight back at them. They play a 4231 and the 2 pretty much sit, so the area for our 10's might be at a premium centrally, however there will be space wide, (especially their Right back area where I expect them to have a centre-half playing).

I haven't seen anything from their 3 support players to suggest that they will be able to get from their deeper positions, (as we force them back), up to support Creaney, and it's this here where their strategy breaks down, (hopefully).

The key will be making sure we take our chances when they come, and not give them attacking set-piece. JCL is another with a decent long throw, (centre-half playing out of position at right back).

[Edit]

Oh hang on.

I've just seen that they dropped Creaney last week and Wreh played through the middle). (They signed him from Hartlepool last season). He's much quicker, (not hard), and often plays behind Creaney, so as they got a result last week maybe they will go with that again. We would enjoy that much less with our WB's pushing up.
