Yep that was Terry Heilbron that 'boots' mentioned in his original post.

Seem to remember ref Dirkin getting abuse at Brighton on boxing day in 1999, Can't remember why it may have been for giving Brighton a dodgy decision . (Am sure Mr Erroll will know)

Still remember that Colchester game I was very young! Am I right in saying he have a direct free kick in the box? What sort of rule is that? I remember Samuel’s got wiped out! Quite an intimidating night if I remember !

1. Kevin Johnson, the referee when we were forced to play water polo, instead of football, against Luton on New Year's Day 2014. He appeared to call the game off when the pitch became obviously unplayable but when John Still, then the Luton manager, protested allowed the game to continue. We eventually lost 2-1. Graham Stack got injured in the conditions and had to be replaced in goal by Nicky Jupp.

2. The idiot who threw the smoke bomb that led to our injury time winner against Cambridge being chalked off because the assistant referee couldn't see the flight of the ball. This was the same season as #1 above.

I remain convinced Grazioli was onside at Old Trafford, so take off the first goal and it was 3-2, plus Flitney might have saved one or all 3, so basically we won 2-0

2 IIRC was that not a televised game and the goal was by one of the youth players, possibly Martin 'Robbie' Box?

edit - it was indeed George 'watch us wreck the mike' Sykes, but once I had the Robbie Box reference it had to go somewhere

I was right behind the goal. Couldn’t believe what was happening. If I remember correctly, would have put us 3-2 up from 0-2 down. Crazy.

That Middleton ref always left me rolling my eyes, the fact he was promoted to the EFL has me still shaking my head.

Being a bit of a contrarian, although I cannot remember my first Barnet match or virtually any other match, I can remember FIFA ref Brian Hill refereeing a match at Barnet, which must have been in our first time in the football league. Before the days of having a bad refereeing performance and being shunted downwards, I assume there was a vacancy and he was free to do it.

He was brilliant, miles ahead of the game, and you could see why he bagged an FA Cup final and be England’s ref at Euro 88. Of course most of the crowd were on his back all game (naturally) but I thought he was superb.

I got into conversation with the only ex footballer I know (ex Barnet too) and we when through a list of referees he would have known.. Brian got a huge thumbs up but when I mentioned Graham Poll, he just shook his head and went ‘no, no - let’s just leave it there’ as he encountered him in local Hertfordshire football before both stepped up to full time football.

Many such examples to recall, most of which no longer bother me. One that still sticks in the craw however is the Coventry vs Morecambe collusion. Hopefully with DB we can right that wrong.

Why did it take so long for any of us to think of this one? Definitely in the worst 3 at least.

Beeby, Helibron & Stant are the top 3, thankfully all long ago now. Apart from the sending off Beeby spent the whole match treating the Man U players like precious pieces of porcelain, making it clear he had to protect them from those lower league oafs. It got mentioned on BBC Radio Lancashire/ Manchester that night and a caller - must have been a Barnet fan - said "tomorrow morning that ref will pull back his curtains and say 'I ruined a young goalies biggest match of his life last night and that feels great'." Agree that we morally won it 2-0.
Stant's smirk after the dive , it happened right in front of us. It was 'welcome to the football league guys' .In hindsight maybe my reaction was a bit hypocritical given Spike Carter's 'tumble' versus Welling to win a last minute penalty at the end of the previous season.
I'll throw in the referee, LIncoln City and every Lincoln fan responsible for that night in 1987...the racism, chants, the ref picking up a banana and smiling and laughing with a Linocln player as he did so. Never a single word of acknowledgement from Lincoln about it. Winning 6-0 there in 1991 laid it to rest for me!
